Looking Back To 2012. Happy New Year!

Jan 2012

At the start of the year, my kids were not yet talking and were just beginning to walk. Now they are running, jumping, talking and even counting in Spanish. What a difference a year makes. Looking forward to 2013! Happy New Year!!! … [Read more...]

Christmas At The Hospital And Lessons Learned

Christmas started off with a bang but ended with us running to the emergency room with our son, Samuel. Thankfully he is doing well now, but things were really scary for a second there. To add to our anguish, the medical staff at the hospital seemed a little slow and unsure of themselves. It had been a while since we had been inside of a hospital and had forgotten terms like attending vs. resident, but knew enough to know at the time that we needed to “speak to someone else." Once the attending came Samuel got the attention and care needed and deserved. He is doing great now and … [Read more...]

What About Mommy?

David likes it when we say, “go David go” during mealtime. I’m not sure when and how this got started but it's been his thing of late. So yesterday during lunch he made his usual request and we obliged. This time, though, Eva chimed in and had us also say “go Eva go, go daddy go, go Sammy go, go Alex go (the family dog) and go Christmas tree go.” I waited to hear my name be called as we were chanting but it never happened. Normally, I wouldn’t care about such a thing, but it was very disheartening to hear … [Read more...]

Helping Yourself Before Helping Others….

If you’ve ever been on an airplane, you’ve probably seen the safety video suggesting that the mother should help herself before helping her child. As a general rule, I can’t say I agree with this message but I have definitely found this approach to be helpful during mealtime. At mealtime, I used to run myself ragged trying to get my kids to eat. If they didn’t eat I would try feeding them, which often didn’t work because of the grab and hold technique. They see the fork coming and they would grab and hold onto the fork. When that didn’t work, I would prepare another meal … [Read more...]

I’m Having A Very Jazzy Christmas!

For many years, Boyz II Men’sLet It Snow” was my favorite Christmas carol. Back then I was a lot more “relationship” focused. Now that I'm older, a wife and a mother, I can appreciate other songs and other forms of music like jazz for example. While I can’t say that I am a true jazz fan, I do love jazz Christmas music. Something about it makes me feel, I don’t know… jazzy. So here are some of my favorite Christmas jazz tunes that I have downloaded for your listing pleasure. Take a listen and tell me what you think. I guarantee … [Read more...]

Almost Caught The Holy Spirit Last Night But Stopped Myself

Eva in sweatshirt

Eva went to sleep on her own last night at 9pm! I didn’t have to rock her, cradle her, or beg her to go to sleep. She just did it on her own. Before this I had to hold her in my arms until she feel asleep, which was often at 11pm - sometimes later. Last week, though, she started going to sleep on her own but I wasn’t sure it was real. Last night, it was real and I knew that we had turned the corner. I was so overwhelmed with emotion that I almost started shouting in my room Sunday morning style but decided against it because I didn’t want to wake the kids. I am like a new … [Read more...]

What Some New Parents And Non-Parents Have In Common

Eva crying

Yesterday I had lunch with friends and had a fantastic time. At some point, though, they started to complain about the booth behind us because their kids “were out of control.” I didn’t say anything about it because I knew those out of control kids could have easily been mine. New parents or people who don’t have kids are very judgmental of other parents. They always think they could or would do it better if it were them. I know this because I used to be one of those people. I used to be judgmental of other parents especially parents who let their kids watch TV. Well, it … [Read more...]
