The back to school season is upon us (yay) and if you’re a NYC parent you may have seen or heard about the latest reading and math scores for kids in grades 3-8. And if you haven’t seen the scores, I can tell you they are not good.
According to the New York State Education Department, only 30 percent of students passed the Math test and only 26 percent passed the English test. The percentages were even worse when broken down according to race.
I heard a lot of people talking about this yesterday saying that this is a failure of the education system. It probably is, but it may also be a reflection of differences in the educational support for students when they are not in school. What are your thoughts on the causes and/or solutions?
